John A. Comenius – Possible Inspiration after More than 350 Years
Zuzana Svobodová
Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(2):8-9
How can Comenius’ work inspire the humanities and social sciences nowadays? Can Comenius’ work help Christian life in the 21st century? More than 50 years ago, Jan Patočka drew attention to the fact that Comenius had not yet been thought through in any other way than in the narrow didactic approach. Is it now time to take Patočka’s challenge seriously and rethink Comenius’ philosophy of education? What was the meaning of that interlude on the threshold of modern science, where Comenius was seen side-by-side with Mikuláš Kusánský? How to read the author of General Consultation today in order to work on the improvement of human affairs?

Freedom as a Means and a Goal in Comenius’s Philosophy of Education
Peter Kondrla
Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(2):34-47 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2021.032
The article examines the philosophical principles of the Comenius’s educational system and compares them with the postulates of contemporary pedagogy. It analyses the goals and methods of the educational process. With regard to educational goals, attention is paid on the one hand to the development of personality and, on the other hand, to social needs and interests. Educational methods are analysed and interpreted in terms of their focus on repetition of actions or on the development of competencies leading to a creative process of authentic self-realisation. Analyses and interpretations of goals and processes are synthesised into the philosophical...
Harmonia, Scientia, Economia – Three Motifs in the Western Philosophy of Education
Jan Hábl
Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(2):60-72 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2021.034
Education is a dynamic matter. Its movement is related to the movement of human thinking. As one thinks, one also acts, even educationally. In this paper we will understand didactics as a discipline that asks ‘how’ and the philosophy of education as a discipline that asks ‘why’. The task of didactics and its related disciplines is to refl ect the methodology of human formation. The philosophy of education forces pedagogy to think about why it does what it does. What is the goal? What is the point? We will focus on three historical ideological movements, respectively meta-narrative shifts that determined (and still determine)...
Joy in J. A. Comenius’s Conception
Miriam Prokešová
Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(2):82-91 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2021.036
When we talk about the life of John Amos Comenius, we rarely associate it with joy. On the contrary, we know him as a person who faced many very unhappy situations in his life. However, Comenius in his works often mentions joy in various forms (laetitia, gaudium, voluptas, hilaritas). It is obvious that he perceives it as a life attitude from which we can and should draw in our lives. It is not only the joy of education, but, above all, the joy of God that gives man much-needed hope in his sorrows and pains. In the following article, we will ‘immerse ourselves’ in Comenius’s thoughts and words that describe his attitude to...

Helena Zbudilová
Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(2):109-120 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2021.038
The article focuses on the pedagogical legacy of John Amos Comenius (1592–1670) from the point of view of leisure time pedagogy. Comenius’s contribution is sought in the perspective which considers the whole as a basic educational principle and in the direction of man towards true humanity as the basic meaning of education. The interpretation is based on the Christian holistic concept and the theological grounding of the interpretation of leisure time. The main roots of Comenius’s conception of education are found in the psychagogic dimension of educatio and in the scholé phenomenon. The overall meaning of education is sought in its...

Ctirad V. Pospíšil
Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(2):137-153 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2021.040
The aim of the article is to present an interesting part of the second life of J. A. Comenius, namely his relationship to the Czechoslovak Freemasons during the First Republic period. The author analyzes the occurrences of the name of the Moravian giant in the periodicals Svobodný zednář and Die drei Ringe. The main interest of Czechoslovak Masons was to prove the influence of the J. A. Comenius’ ideas on the establishment of the first Masonic constitutions in 1723. Another thematic line connected with Comenius was the emphasis on the religious dimension of Masons. In addition, the author of the study points to a number of personalities...

Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(2):195-203 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2021.044
The presented text deals with a probe examining the relationship between spirituality and burnout syndrome and its applicability in the employees of Hospice of St Jan Nepomuk Neumann. It is based on the fact that spirituality is mentioned as one of the possible elements to prevent the development of burnout syndrome, as stated and at least partially confirmed by many foreign studies. Standardised questionnaires were used for the probe in the study of the connection between spirituality (SWBS – The Spiritual Well-Being Scale) and burnout syndrome (SMBM – Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure). In this probe, we tested the two (respectively three)...
