Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(1):34-49 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2021.002
Contrary to expectations, Zambia, similarly to many other Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries and unlike most high-income Western countries, protected the public health against Covid-19 relatively successfully, at least during the first year of the pandemic. How is this possible given the resource-limited health care system, widespread comorbidities, and other adverse conditions in SSA? In this paper we discuss the possible role of religion, philosophy of life, global health approach, traditional medicine, as well as experiences with previous deadly epidemics, that might have contributed to Zambia’s public health success. We draw on previous...
From ‘Personal Coping’ to ‘Social Coping’. How to React to a Pandemic, a Proposal by Ethics
Emanuele Lacca
Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(1):59-67 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2021.004
In the light of the existing reflections on Covid-19 issues, the text proposes a new reflection on the consequences of a pandemic from the point of view of Christian Social Ethics, its strategies, and reactions in everyday life. The author shows that common good, solidarity, and subsidiarity, fundamental principles of social ethics, are decisive in enabling authentic ‘coping’ to survive the pandemic aftermath. The main implication of the contribution is to show an alternative way of overcoming the breakdown caused by the pandemic state. The methodology the text uses is the theoretical-hermeneutical one proper to the humanistic sciences,...
The Corona-virus Pandemic in the Context of Reading and Interpreting the Signs of the Times
Jana Maryšková
Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(1):77-86 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2021.006
The article discusses the current corona-virus pandemic as a possible ‘sign of the times’ in the sense of the Church’s role in ‘examining the signs of the time and interpreting them in the light of the gospel’. It also asks how the corona-virus pandemic can be interpreted in this context. First, it presents general criteria for reading the signs of the times. Then it gives four selected interpretations of the corona-virus pandemic which are then theologically reflected upon using the above criteria. Based on this reflection, it shows that not every interpretation of a pandemic can be considered a reading of the signs of...
Quality of Life in the Time of Coronavirus from the Perspective of Social Work
Karel Řezáč
Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(1):98-108 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2021.011
The time of the coronavirus crisis has virtually affected every aspect of our lives. Nevertheless, the effects of the pandemic and related measures are most often discussed in the public sphere in the context of health and economic aspects of social life. Social work, due to its complex nature, makes it possible to look at problems in a broader context, and therefore its perspective seems to be suitable for drawing attention to the all-round consequences of the pandemic and their impact on the quality of life. The aim of this theoretical study is to discuss and draw attention to the risks related to the quality of life that arise from the covid-19...

Ondřej Doskočil, Andrea Beláňová
Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(1):128-148 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2021.013
The text deals with the experience of Czech hospital chaplains in 2020. Specifically, it concerns the period during the spring and autumn waves of the pandemic caused by the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus which leads to a viral disease known as covid-19. The article builds on data obtained through an online questionnaire and subsequent ten interviews with hospital chaplains. The results of the research are presented in four thematic blocks: chaplain and institutions, chaplain and staff, chaplain and patient, and the chaplain himself. Based on a qualitative analysis of the data, we conclude that the pandemic affected the self-concept of many chaplains....

Stanislav Suda
Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(1):161-172 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2021.015
The topic of the corona-virus crisis is current and data on the ways in which individual students experience this crisis and the impact on their studies or profession are not yet known. The conducted qualitative survey is therefore devoted to experiencing this crisis from the perspective of students and the importance of the foundations of their attitudes in coping with this challenging situation. Students of the bachelor’s programme Leisure Education were given an assignment – an authorial essay on the topic ‘I, my profession, and covid’. This was then phenomenologically analysed in order to determine the subjective level of...

Josef Nota
Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(1):188-203 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2021.017
The researched issue is the impact of infection caused by a new type of coronavirus in the environment of a day care centre. The importance of the issue is given by the fact that the topic directly concerns the lives of all actors connected with the environment offering social services. The purpose was to use the stories obtained from the helpers in order to look at the subjective picture which shows the current situation of the actors. With the onset of the pandemic and the introduction of anti-pandemic measures, they are coming into a specific situation and are facing (up to now) an unknown challenge. The aim of this paper was to use qualitative...

Stuart Nicolson
Caritas et veritas 2021, 11(1):219-233 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2021.019
School closures during the time of virus restrictions have caused upheaval for the education of most children except for homeschoolers, who remain mostly unaffected. For parents to choose to homeschool their children, there need to be both reasons and opportunity, and already there has been an increase in parents choosing this option in some countries. This article looks briefly at the current educational context: the negative experiences of most children, parents, and teachers during the restrictions; the general advantages and disadvantages of homeschooling; and the state of homeschooling currently in the Czech Republic, which has been growing at...
