Potentials and Risks of a Social-unit Perceived as a Community for Coping with a Pandemic
Karel Šimr
Caritas et veritas 2022, 12(1):8-9
A pandemic is often simply perceived as a health problem, or as a health problem that needs to be overcome with the help of mathematical and statistical principles. The community dimension of coping with a pandemic, that is, achieving the necessary level of information and trust in the network of social relations in the society, is less perceived. In the first half of 2020, we could observe elements of such a community-based approach towards coping with a pandemic. People sewed masks for others, maintained social distance, and supported each other’s daily living needs. Conversely, in the second half of 2020 and in 2021, we can observe a deep crisis...

The Role of Volunteerism and Buddhist Ethics for the Covid-19 Pandemic Response in Thailand
Soraj Hongladarom, Daniel D. Novotný
Caritas et veritas 2022, 12(1):107-116 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2022.009
Thailand was the first country outside of China where a case of COVID-19 was found when a tourist entered the country from China in February 2020. Still, up until now, the overall mortality from covid-19 remains much lower than in most other countries. What are the factors of this success? In this paper, we focus on the role of volunteerism and argue that its seamless integration into the Thai public health care system is founded upon the predominantly Buddhist religious culture in the country and corresponds to the cultivation of Buddhist virtues, such as karuṇā (compassion), and the motivation to tham bun (do/make merit). We suggest that...

Stuart Nicolson
Caritas et veritas 2022, 12(1):139-159 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2022.011
The recent societal restrictions in reaction to the risk of viral spread have cast light upon a number of issues in society, many of which are addressed at least to some extent by the Church’s Social Doctrine regarding subsidiarity, participation, and solidarity. This paper seeks to show that by developing the presence of these teachings in understanding and dialogue, so that they can be implemented appropriately at local levels where possible, which may lead to wider discussions regarding community cohesion and development, communities as well as individuals would benefi t, thus contributing to society and the common good. The Church’s...

Caritas et veritas 2022, 12(1):174-188 | DOI: 10.32725/cetv.2022.013
Community social work is an approach that has been present in social work since its inception as a distinct field. The Covid-19 pandemic and its effects have once again shown its importance. The study aims to draw possible implications for community-based social work from the realised descriptive analysis of the data, which were obtained during contacts with the clients of the #delamcomuzu project. As part of the descriptive analysis, proportional representation, confidence intervals and, in justified cases, also correlation coefficients were used. The conclusions of the analysis of the data itself are in line with the findings of foreign research....

The aim of the article called ‘Psychological Burden of Social Workers During the Covid-19 Pandemic’ is to describe the impacts of COVID-19 and the measures related to this pandemic in the context of social workers in social services in the Czech Republic. We mainly focus on the extent to which the current situation affects emotional processes, such as anxiety, depression, or stress. These are circumstances that, due to the ongoing pandemic, can still evolve and change. However, we strive to capture the current situation during the pandemic phase. We are aware of the fact that it is a first glance into the issue and that the emotional processes will...
